Victron Lithium LiFePO4 Batteries
Victron Energy Lithium Battery Smart – LiFePO4 Power Solutions
Victron Lithium Lifepo4 Batteries with Smart units are designed using advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) technology, making them highly efficient and durable. These batteries are available in 12.8V or 25.6V with various capacity options. Additionally, they can be connected in series, parallel, or both, allowing for flexible configurations suitable for 12V, 24V, or 48V systems.
In fact, up to 20 batteries can be integrated into a single system. As a result, this enables a maximum storage capacity of 84 kWh at 12V and up to 102 kWh for 24V or 48V systems.
Each LFP cell operates at a nominal voltage of 3.2V. To achieve 12.8V, four cells are connected in series, while an 8-cell series results in 25.6V.
Why Choose Lithium Iron Phosphate?
Exceptional Durability Victron Lithium LiFePO4
Unlike lead-acid batteries, which often fail prematurely due to sulfation, LFP batteries are far more reliable. Lead-acid batteries can be damaged if:
- They are not fully charged for long periods.
- They remain partially or fully discharged for extended durations, such as during seasonal storage.
However, LFP batteries are much more resilient. In contrast to lead-acid, they do not require full charging to maintain longevity. In fact, partial charging can slightly enhance service life.
Furthermore, LFP batteries operate effectively across a broad temperature range, providing:
- Excellent cycling performance
- Lower internal resistance
- Higher overall efficiency
Because of these advantages, LiFePO4 technology is considered the ideal choice for demanding applications.
Improved Energy Efficiency
For systems relying on off-grid solar or wind energy, efficiency is absolutely crucial.
- The round-trip energy efficiency of a typical lead-acid battery (from 100% charge to full discharge and back) is approximately 80%.
- Meanwhile, LFP batteries achieve a much higher efficiency of around 92%.
Additionally, lead-acid batteries become significantly less efficient when they exceed an 80% charge level. In solar systems that require several days of reserve energy, this inefficiency results in power losses as high as 50% or more.
On the other hand, LFP batteries maintain an efficiency of nearly 90%, even under shallow discharge conditions.
Compact & Lightweight Design Victron Lithium LiFePO4
Another key advantage of LFP batteries is their ability to save space and reduce weight. Compared to conventional lead-acid options, they can:
- Reduce overall size and weight by up to 70%
- Provide a more manageable and compact energy storage solution
Advanced Bluetooth Monitoring Victron Lithium LiFePO4
One of the most convenient features of Victron LFP batteries is their built-in Bluetooth functionality. Thanks to this, users can effortlessly monitor critical battery data, including:
- Individual cell voltage
- Temperature levels
- Alarm status notifications
Moreover, the VictronConnect App enables instant access to crucial battery information—even without a direct connection. This feature makes it much easier to diagnose potential issues, such as cell imbalances.
Battery Management System (BMS) & Configuration
To ensure optimal battery performance, Victron provides six Battery Management System (BMS) models tailored to various applications. The battery manual includes a selection guide, making it easier to choose the right BMS for a specific setup.
To minimize the need for frequent balancing, it is recommended to:
- Build 24V systems using 24V batteries.
- Construct 48V systems with two 24V batteries in series, instead of four 12V batteries, which require longer balancing times.
Furthermore, Victron LFP batteries come with built-in cell monitoring and balancing technology. These functions rely on specialized cables, which must be properly daisy-chained and connected to a BMS.
Battery Management System (BMS) – Key Functions for Victron Lithium LiFePO4
To protect and optimize battery life, the BMS performs several critical functions, including:
- Generating a pre-alarm if a cell’s voltage drops below 3.1V (adjustable from 2.85V–3.15V).
- Automatically disconnecting the load when voltage falls under 2.8V (adjustable from 2.6V–2.8V).
- Halting the charging process if a cell’s voltage exceeds 3.75V or when the temperature is outside safe limits.
By incorporating these intelligent protections, the BMS ensures that the battery system remains reliable, safe, and long-lasting.
